History ABUS. Since 1924.
In 1924, August Bremicker and his sons ventured into independence in the small village of Volmarstein an der Ruhr and began producing the first padlocks. Today, the former business in the cellar of the family home has developed into a group of companies operating worldwide.
Over the last nearly 100 years, ABUS has developed a comprehensive security and safety product portfolio worldwide. While not all product offerings are available yet in the U.S. market, ABUS’s global expertise in the security and safety industry is unmatched.
2022
After several years of development work, ABUS is expanding its range to include equestrian helmets and is announcing a global cooperation with equestrian outfitter PIKEUR.
2018
Another award as "Brand of the Century". Product launch of the first purely digital bicycle U-lock ABUS 770A SmartX.
2017
ABUS enters professional cycling as sponsor of the UCI WorldTour team "Movistar Team" parallel to the market launch of the racing helmet "Game Changer". Merger of the companies ABUS Security Center and ABUS Seccor.
2016
The Smartvest wireless alarm system offers reliable all-round security paired with home automation functions in one system, keyword: Smart Home.
2015
ABUS opens ABUS Security World at its headquarters in Wetter, North Rhine-Westphalia, a brand experience world with an exhibition area of over 1,000 square metres and the company's own museum.
2014
Market launch of occupational safety solutions, so-called lockout/tagout products, for industrial use.
2012
ABUS launches the TITALIUM padlock series and thus enters a new dimension of the security market.
2010
With the integration of SECCOR high security GmbH, ABUS is expanding its portfolio to include access control, electronic locking systems and arming devices.
2009
With the window tilt protection FKS 208, ABUS is the first company to bring a security device onto the market for which the VdS recognition also applies when the window element is in a tilted state.
2008
Presentation of the Secvest 2WAY, the world's first hazard alarm system that stands for active burglary protection with mechatronic components and also combines this with fire protection and home emergency call.
2006
Introduction of a new corporate design for a worldwide uniform brand presence as well as introduction of the shop-in-shop system for retailers.
2003
Integration of "Schließanlagen GmbH Pfaffenhain" into the ABUS Group. The company was renamed "ABUS Pfaffenhain GmbH" in 2008.
2001
Integration of Security Center Augsburg into the ABUS Group and thus expansion of the product range to include alarm and video systems.
1998
Welcome to the Internet! Start of the digital age: The first ABUS website goes online, at that time still with the URL abus.de.
1996
Inclusion in the business book "German Standards - Brands of the Century".
1994
10 years after the introduction of the ABUS security door, ABUS presents the successor with the ABUS security house with security technology "from the basement to the roof".
1993
Foundation of the "Mobile Security" division.
1984
Introduction of the ABUS security door. Objective: To make security tangible. Nationwide placement in security shops and police advice centres.
1979
Market launch of the first additional window lock.
1975
Presentation of the first generation of our additional door locks.
1971
ABUS produces the first high shackle lock and thus develops a product that achieves worldwide fame: the two-wheel shackle lock.
1969
Foundation of ABUS Hong Kong Ltd.
1961
Start of production of door cylinders in cooperation with the Italian company Cisa.
1958
ABUS is the first German company to launch brass padlocks. The year also marks the start of series production of two-wheel locks.
1957
Opening of the Rehe production site in the Westerwald. Then as now, high-quality products for the home security and mobile security divisions are developed, produced and tested there.
1949
On the occasion of the company's 25th anniversary, ABUS presents the Diskus padlock. A perennial favourite that is still produced at the Hege site today.
1938
Around 300 employees work for ABUS.
1931
First bicycle lock no. 1000 comes onto the market.
1924
ABUS is founded by August Bremicker and some of his sons. The company starts producing padlocks and hasps. The first product is the "Iron Rock" padlock.
