Wetter/Ruhr, 5. April 2022 – Today, Tuesday, the police crime statistics for the year 2021 were presented for the first time in Berlin by the new Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser. The number of residential burglaries was again affected by the Corona pandemic last year. Compared to the same period of the previous year, fewer crimes were again recorded - this also applies to residential burglaries and attempted burglaries, the number of which amounted to 54,236 cases, compared to 75,023 in 2020. On the other hand, it is pleasing to note that almost half of the crimes (48.7 percent) were broken off at the so-called attempted stage. This can be attributed to correct behavior through intensive educational work and the use of supplementary security technology. Theft from basements, attics and laundry rooms remains a major challenge. In this area, the police crime statistics show 89,860 reported cases. Despite the declining numbers, Minister Faeser sees a continuing major task to be tackled: "Residential burglary is and remains a topical issue. Security within our own four walls is of particular importance to all of us."
Crime seeks new paths "Crime is looking for your way," says Michael Bräuer, Head of Public Relations at ABUS, "even if in recent years the ostensible burglary figures have declined due to home offices, among other things. Thus, due to the pandemic, other crimes such as various forms of the grandchild trick have been added." "Furthermore," adds Michael Bräuer, "people have invested in high-value purchases such as e-bikes or gas grills, which are often inadequately secured. In contrast to the decline in classic residential burglary, high numbers of burglaries in basements, attics and laundry rooms have been recorded here in recent years."
Many people are afraid of burglary - despite falling case numbers Although the number of reported home burglaries is declining, the fear of a home burglary is still widespread. This is shown by a study on the feeling of security of the Germans conducted by the market research institute YouGov on behalf of ABUS in the fall of 2021 (www.sicherheitsumfrage.de). Although the majority of those surveyed feel safe, a substantial proportion of respondents - namely one in three - stated that they felt little or not at all safe. A good quarter said they were very afraid of having their home broken into.
Safety technology works - benefit from promotion The high number of failed burglary attempts shows that the sensitivity towards preventive measures is increasing and the interest in security measures in the private sector is growing. The opportunity to be well prepared for the future in terms of security and to protect one's belongings accordingly is favorable. After all, it is the responsibility of each individual to protect themselves from burglars with suitable security technology. House or apartment owners should take advantage of the subsidies offered by the KfW banking group.
